The process of falconry is known as the process of hunting prey using falcons, and it is a sport that requires a great deal of time and effort, as the falcon needs special conditions to adapt and live, such as a place of residence, food, treatment, etc.  Falcons can be defined as one of the types of birds of prey . It is the fastest of them, as the peregrine falcon is one of the types of falcons. The fastest bird on the face of the earth, and this is what helps it catch its prey, and enables it to hunt on land. Falcons hunt their prey by grabbing it with their claws, but they kill it with their beak. Their wings are also characterized by being pointed, which helps them fly very quickly, and they are characterized by their strength. Sharp eyesight helps it hunt and target prey.

The process of raising falcons requires a great deal of time and effort from the breeder. It is also a commitment and responsibility and is not an easy matter. The following are steps for raising and training falcons: 

Obtaining the license required by the responsible institutions. In the United States of America, for example, a person who wants to raise falcons must train with a licensed falconer (expert in falconry) for two years in order to obtain a license for falconry. It also requires passing a written test. In falconry as well, this varies depending on the country or state to which the trainee belongs.

Choose the appropriate housing for the falcon, as the height and width of the cage should range between approximately 2.4 to 3 meters.

Help the bird get used to and adapt to its new environment, by keeping it at home for a full week. In addition, the falcon’s head must be covered at first using a falcon headdress, with the aim of relieving its tension and pressure, and then you must begin exposing it to sights and sounds in a regular manner. Gradually, and when he starts to get restless again, his head must be covered again.

Spend as much time as possible with the falcon until it gets used to the presence of its handler.

Start training the bird to move, by placing a piece of meat on the breeder’s hand glove, approaching it, and making a noise to attract its attention so that it can stand on the glove and eat, and continue this exercise for 30 minutes until the bird gets used to eating in front of its breeder. You should not try to take food from him, lest he lose his trust in his owner and refrain from eating, and thus the exercise as a whole fails.

Training a falcon to hunt; By throwing the bait on the ground, increasing the distance between it and the bait each time, and using toys that resemble the prey that the hunter would like to catch as bait to train him to do so. For example, a rabbit-shaped doll can be used to train the falcon to hunt rabbits.

Training falcons outside the home

Raising and training a falcon outside the home consists of the following steps:

The falcon must be tied with a long, light cord, approximately 30 meters long.

Start the training process outside the home by using bait and throwing it at a certain distance, gradually increasing the distance, and waiting for the falcon to catch it. The bird must be trained to return to its trainer’s glove at the end and give it a piece of meat as a reward until its performance improves.

Expand the scope of training, then dispense with the rope, by hanging a piece of meat on a balloon or kite, for example.

Warning: Before letting the hawk fly away to fetch the bait while it is being trained outdoors, A radio transmitter must be attached to one of its legs so that its owner can track it.
