The ostrich was called the camel bird, because of its great resemblance to it in terms of external appearance, in addition to some physiological characteristics.

The two appearances are strikingly similar, such as the long neck, prominent eyes, long eyelashes, and large body size.  The length of the female ranges between 1.7 and 1.9 m, while the male’s length ranges between 2.1 and 2.7 m. As for the weight of the female, it ranges between 90 and 109 kg. The weight of the male ranges between 100 and 130 kg,  and his scientific name is Struthio camelus.

The physiological characteristics of ostriches are similar to camels

Naming the ostrich a camel bird is not limited to formal matters only, but rather it has some other characteristics in common with camels. The camel can withstand temperatures and stay without water for long periods of time, just as camels do in the desert.

But these birds love water, although they do not need to drink it in large quantities, because they get what they need from the water from plants, and when they find a small lake or a water hole they drink from it without hesitation.

Ostriches are herbivores that live mostly on plant matter, but they sometimes eat animal remains left by predators, and sometimes they eat locusts.

The ostrich is distinguished by its large size, high speed, and many characteristics similar to the camel, and this was the reason for calling it the camel bird, such as: the neck, long eyelashes, and eyes, in addition to its tolerance of high temperatures, and its tolerance for thirst for long periods as the camel does, and although it loves water, it He can replace it with her plant-based diet.

The ostriches used to exist in abundance in Africa because it is its native habitat, but because of hunting some species of it have become extinct, and the ostriches generally like to exist in forests, among the savannah grass, and in open places
