Causes And Solutions For Smallpox In Birds

Many breeders and bird enthusiasts suffer from diseases that affect birds. There are some diseases that appear in the summer, i.e. hot weather, and there are some that appear in cold weather.

Therefore, today we will discuss this topic with most of the seasonal diseases of birds that you should pay attention to. Because your lack of sufficient experience, negligence, or busyness may harm your birds and cause their death, especially the small ones.

Due to excessive heat and negligence on the part of the breeder, many diseases may spread among birds, especially weak birds such as canaries, goldfinches, bulbuls, as well as zebra finch and many others. Among the diseases that are common in summer are:

Smallpox.

This type of disease affects young birds frequently, and adults rarely.

It is a viral cluster that often appears inside the mouth, or above the eyes and beak, and rarely appears on the legs and other areas of the body. They consist of striations or random, solid shapes in dark yellow or white, depending on the type of bird, resembling stones or hardened soil.

The effect of smallpox on birds.

Smallpox may not affect adult birds, unless it infects vital places in large quantities, such as the eyes, inside the mouth, all the way to the throat, the saddle area, and the reproductive system. If he reaches such a state and has a large amount of smallpox, he may die if he does not receive the necessary care, such as having it removed by the vet, and giving him the necessary medications.

As for young birds less than 3 months old, their death rate is greater, especially if smallpox reaches the mouth and eyes. It is preferable to keep any bird you feel is infected away from the rest. To avoid infection.

Causes of smallpox

One of the most common causes that lead to this viral disease is unsuitable water. Because of the air temperature, the water becomes hot, meaning the appropriate environment for viruses to reproduce. Or you put water that is not suitable for drinking capacity for the birds.

The other reason is the transmission of infection from wild foreign birds, through insects such as mosquitoes. A single bite of this insect is capable of infecting your weakened birds with this disease.

Methods of prevention and treatment of this disease.

Prevention is better than cure. You must be more careful to avoid this disease. Here are some tips to avoid smallpox.

The best preventive treatment is to give uninfected birds an injection to prevent smallpox, an effective substance to kill the virus that causes smallpox, and most poultry farming companies vaccinate their poultry with this injection.

Note: Do not give the injection to any infected bird because it will make it worse. The injection contains the virus in a weak quantity, in order to make the immune system recognize it.

  •  You should change the water every 4 to 5 hours, especially during hot seasons.
  • Don’t leave your bird’s water exposed to the sun for too long.
  • Try to place your birds in a place away from wild birds.
  • Spray your birds with sterile water, especially in the summer, to avoid insects that carry viruses. (There are many natural recipes that you can make, or buy products from a bird seller for this purpose.)
  • Never neglect hygiene, as dirt is one of the biggest causes of diseases and infectious viruses.

Methods of treating smallpox.

If you want to treat your birds at home, there are some tips, most of which we have tried on many infected birds.

If the smallpox pimple is small, remove it so that it does not grow larger, and sterilize the wound with water with a little alcohol.

If the pimple is much smaller or cannot be removed, smear it with a little tar, or rub it with a cut garlic clove.

You can buy some sterilizing sprays from specialized stores, which can be sprayed on the affected areas of the birds.

Note: These treatments are not 100% guaranteed because smallpox has no guaranteed treatment, so we strongly recommend preventing it and frequent cleaning, especially in the summer.

We also advise you to isolate any infected bird, try to treat it with the steps we discussed, and do not return it with the rest of the birds until you are sure of its complete recovery
