Diarrhea In Budgerigars: Its Types, Causes And Treatment

Diarrheal disease in Budgerigars is one of the most common diseases that affect Budgerigars. There are many reasons for Budgerigars to be exposed to diarrhea, and Budgerigars must be treated faster than diarrhea. Budgerigars must also be isolated in a cage alone during treatment because diarrhea is considered an infectious disease, and is divided into two types:

A – White diarrhea in budgerigars:

White diarrhea is considered more dangerous than green diarrhea due to the rapid transmission of infection to other birds, and its most important symptoms are the release of liquid and white secretions around the opening of the compound, and the bird loses its appetite and becomes lethargic.

B – Green diarrhea in budgerigars: (Salmonella)

Green diarrhea, known as salmonella, poses a threat to the bird’s life if it is neglected and not treated as soon as it appears. Its symptoms include severe distress during the bird’s defecation and the glaucoma turning into a sticky liquid with the bird drinking too much water.

Causes of diarrhea in budgerigars:

Overfeeding the budgerigar with soaked vegetables and food containing a large amount of water, or providing iced water or spoiled food, or a sudden change in the nature of the food provided to the bird, as well as the bird getting a cold that leads to diarrhea.

Treatment of diarrhea in budgerigars:

First: Medical quarantine:

1 – The sick bird must be isolated from the rest of the birds so that the infection is not transmitted to it.

2 – Stop giving the affected bird vegetables and fruits, such as grapes and apples, and correct the diet.

3 – Ensure that the cage is clean of feces and dirt, and we clean it twice a day, as liquid feces accelerate the transmission of the disease.

4 – The affected bird must be given two drops of olive oil using a dropper to remove any harmful substances stuck in its digestive tract.

5 – Add two drops of lemon into the water and try to keep the water away from the bird as much as possible. Water is presented in a calculated and precise manner so that the disease is quickly overcome.
