Egg Retention Inside The Female Bird

Many bird breeders suffer from the problem of egg entrapment or retention inside the female. That is, the inability of the female to produce one or more eggs. This is common among various types of birds, such as parrots, canaries, Java birds, and others…

Mostly people who are beginners in the field of bird keeping. They may not know how to deal with such a situation, and worse, they may not even know that the problem exists. This type of symptom, which we can call a disease, could be fatal to birds if we do not act quickly in solving this type of problem.

Reasons for egg retention inside the female

There are many reasons why this problem may occur, the most common of which is…

The female is relatively small.

What we mean by this is that the female may be having her first experience. That is, she is not yet accustomed to ovulation, and this problem often occurs in young females because the egg outlet does not expand large enough for the egg to exit. Or she cannot squeeze or push with enough force for the egg to come out.

Old female.

Like the previous example… sometimes as the female grows older, she becomes weak, such that she is unable to press on her abdomen with enough force to expel the egg.

Outlet infections.

If there is any wound or infection in the female’s outlet, it will make her unable to expel the egg because she feels pain while the egg reaches the outlet. So you stay stuck there.

Inflammation may also occur when there is strong pressure from the female, which may cause a tear or injury to the outlet.

Physically weak female.

Always stay away from buying weak females. Or the one you don’t see moving much, or inactive. Or at least put her alone before mating her with the male. This is what you mean by taking care of her to gain her health and become physically ready for marriage.

lack of calcium.

Calcium deficiency may be one of the reasons for egg retention, because its deficiency may make the egg layer weak. Which makes getting out somewhat difficult.

Fatty eating.

Fatty eating is not recommended, especially for females, because too much fat may make the egg outlet blocked and fat due to accumulated fat.

Egg size.

Sometimes, and rarely, the egg grows abnormally inside the abdomen. It makes its size larger than what the internet port can output.

Egg position.

This is another rare case, which is that the egg inside the female is upside down, making it very difficult for it to come out, except with the help of the breeder.

What are the symptoms of egg retention?

There are many symptoms that you may notice in a female, making you suspect that the female has something abnormal.

    • Lethargy and laziness with eyes closed.
    • His breath is blowing his nose.

Anorexia.

  • Swelling of the back of the abdomen (this is one of the strongest symptoms).
  • To be more certain, you may see it, for example, sometimes entering the nest. Or she laid the first egg but was more than 4 days late in the second…

How do I solve this problem?

Say:

  • Do not put females to males at an early age of 4 or 5. Wait half a year or more.
  • Providing calcium continuously, the best way is cuttlefish bone. Or through other natural products or medicine rich in calcium.
  • Do not give birds a lot of sugary food, such as bread and some dry fruits. Because this type of eating makes females fat.
  • Examine the female’s health, whether she is healthy and active, and make sure she is free of diseases before placing her for mating.
  • Give the birds green vegetables, such as lettuce or cabbage, mixing them with a little olive oil.

Therapeutically :

If you notice the symptoms we talked about previously. Here’s what you should do…

Gently remove the female from the cage. Then get the cotton with which we wipe the ear… immerse it in oil… then apply the oil to the exit in a gentle way, while feeling the egg area with your finger.

  • Or you can heat the water and place the female outlet facing the hot water vapor…but be careful and put a safe distance between the female and the water vapor so that no burns occur.

note.

If all these methods do not work. Try to seek help from someone who is an expert with years in the field and who understands birds. He will know how to deal with the situation and help you… In some critical cases, you may need a veterinarian to extract the egg by performing a simple operation. It expands the outlet and then restores it with suture.
