One of the seasons that breeders fear most for their birds is winter because of its cold, which can be fatal to some types of birds, especially small and very old ones.

Due to lack of sufficient experience, many new breeders, especially, lose a lot of their birds, especially if there are new chicks that have emerged from the eggs. Therefore, with this topic, we will try to give you some information that may benefit you on how to protect your birds from this cold weather, as well as ways to treat your birds if they are infected with one of the diseases of the winter season.

Types of winter diseases

Coryza (cold):

It is one of the most common diseases in the winter, especially in areas with harsh weather.

Typhoid disease:

It is one of the most dangerous diseases that may affect your bird. Its causes are also strong humidity, in addition to the cold and direct currents that blow to the bird.

tuberculosis:

Another of the most dangerous diseases, which may cause a high rate of death…

Lung or respiratory diseases:

This disease leads to many disorders and problems with the functional performance of the respiratory system. 

Parrot fever:

Another fatal disease, this disease also affects the respiratory system, with some other symptoms… such as mucus and blockage of the bird’s sinuses, with severe and continuous fatigue and exhaustion, meaning the bird becomes completely lethargic throughout the day.

How to protect your birds from disease

You must take things very seriously. It is best to place your birds in a medium-sized room that does not contain a lot of humidity… There are also many tips that you can follow to avoid winter diseases in your birds.

    • Buy a heating lamp, or some thermal equipment that you place in the room for the purpose of heating.
    • Buy some tools that you can put in the room to absorb moisture, if the room has a high humidity level.
    • Provide leftover wood, or what is known as wood carpentry, then place it on the floor to absorb the cold. (You must change it every 3 to 5 days, to avoid the problem of insect gathering and unpleasant odor.
    • Covering the walls with cork or a rug, to reduce the rate of cold entry.

The room must have a door that closes, so as not to expose your birds to deadly air currents.

    • Open the door or window from time to time to ventilate the room.
    • You should give the birds different, useful foods, especially cotton and grains, because they contain calories that help warm the body.

If you place the cage in your room or in the kitchen, for example, warm the cage by placing it inside a wooden box or shelf, or by wrapping the cage in a good way with a piece of wool to prevent the cold from entering.

  • But if you have a husband who has young chicks, try putting wood scraps or salvaged wood, known as carpentry, for them.

Treating winter diseases.

If you feel that your bird has a cold, or has respiratory problems, give it lemon juice with water, or buy vitamin C tablets dissolved in water.

You can also try a mixture of boiled and crushed garlic, with a little olive oil. You can add this mixture with millet, or with vegetables and fruits.

You can also boil onions or garlic with the fenugreek, then put the water in the place designated for drinking after it has cooled.
