Ways To Stimulate The Mating Of Cockatiels

How to motivate cockatiels to mate?

Providing birds with proper nutrition, adequate lighting, adequate space, and a nesting box are important considerations when preparing a cockatiel for breeding,  and the following is an explanation of all of this:

Proper nutrition

You can ask your veterinarian and consult him about providing some vitamins to the cockatiel, or vegetables such as radishes, leeks, parsley, spinach, and others.  A healthy diet for cockatiels generally includes providing them with healthy food, in addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, to ensure that the birds receive the appropriate nutrition to produce healthy eggs.

A calcium supplement can also be added to the diet to help the female regain the nutrients she loses during the egg-laying process. The cockatiel must also be provided with fresh, clean water, making sure to change it several times a day.

Proper lighting

One of the important things to stimulate cockatiels to mate is also providing appropriate lighting. In captivity, the cockatiel can reproduce at any time of the year in response to the light it receives. Providing the cockatiel with artificial light for 12-14 hours a day will help stimulate it to mate.

Sufficient space

The cockatiel pair must be placed in a cage whose dimensions are not less than 50 x 50 x 127 cm. This will help provide a large and suitable space for laying eggs and raising young ones. The cage must also be placed in a quiet place in the house.

If it is noticed that the male and female do not show a feeling of interest in each other, they must be kept in separate cages near each other for several days, after which it can be observed that the male has begun jumping around and whistling to attract the female’s attention, and he may also begin trying to reach her by moving. in all directions inside the cage, and then they can be kept together in the same cage.

Nesting box

The nesting box is considered one of the essential things when raising cockatiels. In general, care must be taken to choose a box of a suitable and large size, and it has an opening through which it is easy to enter.

Cockatiel mating conditions

Cockatiel pairs can reproduce only if they feel bonded and compatible with each other, and the males are at least 18 months old and the females are at least two years old.

The two birds must be placed in two separate cages with each other’s permission at first. Then, if interest is noticed between them, the two birds can be moved to the same cage.

It must also be ensured that there is no relationship between males and females to give birth to healthy, undeformed young.

Reasons why cockatiels do not mate

There are many reasons that may prevent a cockatiel from mating, the most prominent of which are:

The bird does not feel comfortable in the cage or nest, so you must make sure to place it in a quiet place away from children and other pets such as dogs or cats.

A female cockatiel refuses to mate because she feels sick, or because she is old.
