Factors affecting the mass of quail birds

There are many factors affecting the mass of quails, the most prominent of which are the following:

Quail type

The mass of a quail varies depending on its breed, as was explained previously. Some quail breeds can grow larger than others, or very quickly, and these breeds are usually the most bred for the purpose of producing meat. The most prominent of these breeds are: Coturnix quail, which, although they are not the largest known quail breeds, are distinguished by their rapid growth. They reach sexual maturity at only 6 weeks old.

There is also a special breed of quail known as the Jumbo Coturnix quail , which is specially bred because of its large size, as its mass exceeds 400 grams. On the other hand, there is also another type of quail, the Bob White quail, which grows very slowly, as it reaches maturity. After 3 to 5 months of hatching, its mass reaches 250 grams.

Diet

The diet of a quail greatly affects the mass it can reach, as it must be provided with a diet containing 23 to 30% protein after hatching, and after it reaches an age ranging between 6 to 8 weeks, its diet must be converted to a special diet . For adults, it contains 19 to 20% protein. They can also be provided with nutritional supplements and some substances that help them digest.

The size of the cage or barn

The area allocated for raising quails can affect their mass; When raising quails for meat, care must be taken that the area allocated to each one does not exceed 0.2 square meters, as the narrow space limits their movement, thus increasing their weight gain faster.
